Rhipsalis

Rhipsalis is found as an epiphyte in tropical rainforests, but some species may also grow lithophytic -that is growing in the cracks of rocks. There are just under 40 species, the genus is found widely in Central America, parts of the Caribbean and a significant part of Northern and Central South America. Most diversity of Rhipsalis is found in the rainforests of the Mata Atlantica in Southeastern Brazil. It is found throughout the New World, and additionally in (Sub-Saharan) tropical Africa, Madagascar and Sri Lanka. Rhipsalis, belonging to the Cactaceae, is the only cactus with a natural occurrence outside the New World.

Although Rhipsalis belongs to the family of the Cactaceae, it does not have the notorious spines, a property which makes it very suitable to keep as indoor ornamental plants.
